How to compare carrier quotes on identical terms

Income annuity quotes for the same person can differ meaningfully between carriers. That only tells you something if every quote is for exactly the same contract.

Check that every quote matches on

  1. Premium — the exact same amount.
  2. Income start date — even a few months’ difference changes the payment.
  3. Guarantee option — life only, period certain (and how many years), or cash refund.
  4. Single or joint, and the survivor percentage for joint.
  5. Ages and dates of birth used.
  6. State — products and premium taxes vary.
  7. Tax status — IRA (qualified) or savings (non-qualified).
  8. Payment frequency — monthly, quarterly, or annual.
  9. Quote date — rates change; compare quotes from the same day.

Then look beyond the number

  • The carrier’s financial strength rating — guarantees depend on its claims-paying ability.
  • How long the quote is guaranteed, and what happens if rates change before the money arrives.
When we prepare your quotes, we line them up on identical terms like this — exact quotes from carriers available through Producers XL.

Common questions

Why do annuity quotes differ between carriers?

Each insurer prices based on its own investments, expenses, and appetite for business at that moment. For the same person and premium, published surveys show a meaningful spread between the average and best quote.

How long is an annuity quote good for?

It varies by carrier, often a short window. Ask how long the rate is guaranteed and what happens if your money arrives later.
